Updated Site (Shoreline) Alteration By-laws:

Seguin Township Council approved updated site alteration by-law and tree conservation by-laws at the March 4, 2024 meeting (link to staff report to Council, page 253).  Seguin intends that these by-laws better protect Seguin’s lakes and ecosystems. The site alteration by-law now applies to all lands within 60 metres (increased from 20 m) of a shoreline and all lands zoned Environmental Protection (EP and EP1). This increase was identified at their meeting in January and deferred the decision until March 4.   The tree alteration by-law limits the destruction or injury of trees within 20 metres of a shoreline. Short Term Rentals:

Also on March 4, 2024, Seguin Township Council received a staff report (page 349) as an update on the short term rental situation in Seguin with a recommendation to maintain the status quo. Seguin will continue to rely on the “Quality of Life” by-laws (addressing noise, nuisance, parking, waste disposal, burning and fireworks) to address any related issue

The writing team has continued to work diligently on the Sugar Lake History project all winter. Creating this historical account has been quite the learning process. Every step has been part of an interesting and rewarding journey. The book covers a broad scope and includes a significant number of graphics and photos. We are determined to make this project the best it can be!

We are also happy to report that we are very close to wrapping up the initial draft. We are currently chasing down a few missing details from our residents and community members. Once these final pieces are incorporated into the text, we will be sending it off to the publisher.

The Fire Rating in Seguin right now is HIGH! This means:

NO OPEN BURNING allowed.

Burn Permits are suspended. NO FIREWORKS allowed. Campfires permitted for cooking, warmth, and socializing (maximum size 1m x 1m).

Seguin Township has updated its Fireworks and Open Burning By-laws. Fireworks are now only permitted on the following holidays between dusk and 11:00 p.m.:

Victoria Day and the Saturday and Sunday of that holiday weekend.

Canada Day, and:

• If Canada Day falls on a Monday or Tuesday, the preceding Saturday and Sunday
• If Canada Day falls on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, the following Friday and Saturday

New Year’s Eve/Day, following the time limits listed below.

Consumer fireworks can only be set off on the days mentioned above, between dusk and 11:00 p.m., except for New Year’s Eve/Day when fireworks are allowed until 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

There have also been changes to the open burning by-law as well, specifically with higher maximum fines and penalties and hindering enforcement.

Please make sure to keep your dog from running/walking on the roads around our lake.

Some folks out walking may not appreciate your pup out loose, and it can be hazardous for drivers.

The Orrville General store is now open!

The new store owners have applied for licenses for both lottery and the LCBO. They are stocking many of the basics, along with ice cream!
